How do you find your story?

If this is what stops you don’t be discouraged there are many ways to find inspiration. As much as you can, take what inspires you and make it your own. Taking themes or plots from previously successful stories can sometimes be the beginning of the road to rejection, you really need to draw on your own imagination as much as you can. You will get better at this with time and continued effort.

The important thing to remember is not to allow yourself to get discouraged, that serves no one. If you’re really having a hard time coming up with ideas take some time out, call it your Inspiration Time, go for a walk in the park or the beach, meditate or do whatever it is that relaxes you. Ideas go out you have to give them some ground to come in, relax your mind, don’t stress.

Creating a fertile mind that is open to recieving inspiration is your first step, it will allow you to see all the opportunities for stories around you. Sure you may repeat old themes or ideas but they will have a uniquely ‘you’ slant to them, you will begin to develop your own writers voice.

With the foundations above you have some tools that will allow inspiration to work for you. So now you just need to get active in looking just as you go about your day with notepad and pen handy jot down ideas as you see them. Like a detective you are on a mission, there a clues all around you find them and build on them.

Junk Can Be Fun

Instead of throwing away used cartons and boxes or similar items they are great for building and creating anything kids can come up with.

What You Need:- Strong glue or tape for big items, scissors, paint, crayons, felt pens, scrap paper, ribbons, straws, feathers etc;

What To Do:- If you have a spare shelf, cupboard or box you can start collecting bottle tops, buttons, cartons, cards, corks, wool, straws, lids, paper plates, cardboard cylinders and go ahead add anything else you can think of.

There is an endless amount of things to make and children will come up with their own ideas but here are a couple of fun ones.

Drums

What You Need:- Boxes, tins or plastic containers, sticks or wooden spoons, scissors or hole punch, string or ribbon.

What To Do:- Choose a container to be your drum, make two holes, opposite each other, near the top of the drum. Cut string or ribbon, long enough to go around the neck and thread through the holes and secure.

Tooters

What You Need:- Cardboard cylinders various lengths, paper, glue, elastic bands.

What To Do:- Glue around outside of one end of cylinder, glue paper to the cylinder end, secure with elastic band and put small hole in paper. Different lengths will make different sounds when children blow through.

Have Fun :)

Kids Love Painting

Kids love painting its a great way for them to play with colour and just let their imagination run free. What is impotant to remember is the process of creating is much more important than the fininished painting.

All the kids need is encouragement, opportunity and a little bit of equipment and of course a safe place to make a mess.

What you need…..

Brushes

Brushes should have long fairly thick handles which are easy to grip and control. Start with thick bristled brushes and finer ones can be added as more control has been gained. If possible have one brush for each colour or water and a cloth for rinsing colours. Be sure to wash clean and store with bristles facing up.

Paper

Provide fairly large sheets if possible so asĀ  not to restrict their creative urges.

Containers

Any old jar, cup or plastic container is suitable.

Colourings

Edible vegetable dyes are available from toy shops and art suppliers in powder form. The colours are bright but they do not come in black or white. To use, first dissolve a small quantity in a teaspoon of water then add cornflour paste or starch to make a thick paint. Food colouring added to the starch or paste will also make a suitable paint. Tempera is non toxic powered paint available in art supply stores. There are a wide variety of colours including black and white. This paint drys quickly which makes it easier to paint over without blending colours. Mixing one part water to two parts paste works best.

Be prepared with covers to protect clothes and surrounding area if required.

Let them enjoy and have Fun :)
